Sodding Installation & Care

  • Step 1: Soil Health Examination & Preparation

Before we ever begin laying a single piece of new grass ( sod ), we meticulously assess the health and condition of your soil. This is a very important step, as it ensures that your new grass can adapt easily and thrive in its place. Our examination step ensures your sod makes your property look beautiful.

  • Step 2: Existing Grass/Weed Removal

Remove and dispose of any existing grass/weeds by trimming or cutting it with either line trimmer or in some situations a sod cutter.

  • Step 3: Turning Over The Soil

Using a Rototiller we loosen the soil in order to aerate the ground and allow nutrients in the soil to be absorbed by the new grass roots.

  • Step 4: Adding Topsoil/Soil Amendments if Needed

Next, we apply the required elements if needed and a layer of fresh topsoil to ensure the soil condition is balanced. This is also important because the old soil might be taken out along with the old lawn.

  • Step 5: Leveling/Grading The Lawn Area

In the next step, we grade and level the lawn to make sure that there are no visible bumps and to avoid any puddling of water after a rainfall.

  • Step 6: Rolling The Lawn Area Using a Drum and Final leveling

We do that to make sure the grading and leveling were done on the best side possible and thus we do the final grading if needed.

  • Step 7: New Grass Installation & Final Rolling

In this step, we install the fresh sod in a brick pattern against the slope of the lawn to avoid it from sliding. We perform the final rolling to eliminate any air pockets that might result in dead spots on the surface.

Sodding/Sod Installation FAQ

  • What is Sod?

Sod is actually live grass that has been harvested with its roots intact and then transplanted to another location. Sod is generally used for new lawns, or to repair/patch up existing ones. Sod can also be used on golf courses, parks, and other areas where a manicured look is desired.

  • What is Sod Installation?
Sod installation is simply the process of installing sod in the desired location.
  • How do I know if I need to Resod my lawn?
There are a few Sod installation guidelines that will help you determine whether your lawn is ready for Sod. First, take a look at the condition of your existing grass. If it is thin, patchy, or generally unhealthy, Sod may be the best option. Secondly, consider the amount of time and effort you are willing to put into maintaining your lawn. Sod provides an instant solution for a high-quality lawn with little ongoing maintenance required.
  • What kind of grass is best for my lawn?
There is no definitive answer to this question as it depends on your specific needs and preferences. Some factors you may want to consider include climate, soil type, shade vs. sun, and whether you desire a low-maintenance lawn or one that will be the envy of the neighborhood. Sod installation is a great way to achieve a beautiful and healthy lawn quickly.
  • What are the benefits of Sodding a lawn?
Sod installation has a number of benefits, including a quicker way to achieve a beautiful lawn, less water, and fertilizer needed, and reduced weed growth. grass also helps to prevent soil erosion and can provide a softer surface for outdoor activities.
  • Are there any disadvantages to Sod installation?
The Sod installation cost is typically higher than grass seed, but you will save money in the long run on water and fertilizer costs. Sodding also requires more initial care than grass seed, but once it is established, Sod needs very little maintenance.
  • How Do You Guys Deal With Weeds when sodding?

    Weeds are a common problem when it comes to lawns, but there are a few things we do when we do sod installation to prevent weeds from coming back;

    • First of all, we check how big are the weeds. If the weeds are too big, we will trim them all and spray roundup to make sure the weeds are dead.
    • Secondly, if the weeds are still small, we remove them, together with the existing grass using a sod cutter.
    • Afterward, we will dig with a pickaxe around the edge of the lawn (where the machine could not reach) and remove everything that grows there in order to ensure a fresh start. Then, we turn over the soil using a rototiller. This step is done for few reasons; it allows us to aerate the soil and move it around better, and it will also allow a better flow of oxygen and nutrients to the new lawn's roots so it can establish faster. Also and very importantly, when rototilling is done, we also destroy all existing root systems (including weeds).
    • Finally, when we install the thick and fresh sod, it blocks the sun from penetrating and thus prevents the weeds from getting the most important element, light exposure.
  • What Is the Process of Sodding a Lawn?
Sodding a lawn is not a difficult process, but there are a few important things to keep in mind. Feel free to look at our thorough lawn installation steps above.
  • What are some of the main reasons the lawn is dying?
There are several reasons why your lawn may be dying. Some common causes include pests, diseases, improper watering, lack of nutrients, and heavy foot traffic. If you suspect that one of these is the problem, it is best to seek help from a professional.
  • How can I prevent my lawn from getting too much shade?
If you have trees on your property, it is inevitable that some parts of your lawn will be shaded. However, you can improve the situation by trimming the trees so that they allow more sunlight to reach the ground. Additionally, you can choose grasses that are tolerant of shade for those areas, for example, tall fescue.
