Interlocking Process

Step 1: Planning & Design

The first step in any interlocking project is to assess the area and determine your desired layout and design. Creating a detailed plan which includes measurements and materials needed while considering factors such as drainage, slope and existing elements.

Step 2: Excavation

We will then clear the area of vegetation, debris, and any existing structures. This allows us to excavate the site to the required depth, taking into account the thickness of the base and pavers.

Step 3: Base Preparation

Preparing the base includes installing a geotextile fabric to prevent weed growth and stabilize the base. To create the solid and level base we spread and compact a layer of granular material, such as crushed stone or gravel.

Step 4: Compaction and Sand Bedding

Now we use a vibrating plate compactor to firmly compact the pavers into the base. Spreading a layer of fine sand over the surface fills the gaps between the pavers. Now we compact the pavers one more time to settle them properly.

Step 5: Paver Installation

Next, we start laying the pavers from one corner or edge, following the design plan. To ensure proper alignment, spacing, and pattern of the design we will cut pavers to fit the edges and corners using a wet saw if necessary..

Step 6: Edge Restraints

Installing edge restraints, such as plastic or concrete will hold the pavers in place to prevent any shifting.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Clean the surface of the pavers by removing any excess sand or debris then apply a sealant or joint stabilizer. This step enhances the durability and appearance of the interlocking.

Interlock / Stone Work FAQ

Interlock / Stone Work FAQ

  • Interlock refers to a type of hardscaping technique that involves using interlocking pavers or stones to create a stable and decorative surface. Interlocking is typically used for driveways, walkways, patios, and other outdoor areas.
  • Interlocking stone work provides a durable, versatile, and visually appealing solution for various outdoor design projects, offering long-term benefits and enjoyment for homeowners. It's also easy to maintain and repair while increasing the value of your property.
  • Interlocking stones, also known as pavers, can have a long lifespan if properly installed and maintained. They are designed to be durable and withstand heavy traffic. On average, interlocking stones can last anywhere from 20 to 30 years or more.
  • Yes, interlocking pavers do require regular maintenance to keep them in good condition. Specific maintenance requirements may vary depending on factors such as the type of pavers, climate, and level of use. Typical maintenance includes: regular cleaning, power washing, resealing, replacing joint sand and regular inspection.
  • Over time, weather conditions can create gaps between stones and allow for weed growth. However, there are preventative actions you can take. One effective method is to use polymeric sand. This type of sand contains a binding agent that, when activated with water, forms a solid barrier between the pavers. This helps prevent weed seeds from germinating and reduces weed growth between the joints.
