Dreaming about getting that lush lawn you see in movies? Well, that perfect lawn turf is within your reach! You will never experience any trouble doing it on your own. Garden installation is not complicated. To guide you in the process, listed below are several steps you can follow for your lawn goals.
When to Lay Turf
The best time to start your garden installation is during spring or autumn. The rain will help the new grass to establish roots. Additionally, you can avoid frost in the winter and scorching weather in the summer.
Preparation
First, you have to prepare the area where you will lay your turf. The time and effort spent in the preparation will be worth it. A well-prepared ground will support a healthy lawn. Clear the area of clippings and weeds. Remove other materials such as stones. Ensure that the surface is even. You may want to level it with topsoil using a wheelbarrow and a rake. If there is an existing turf, remove it. You may slice beneath the turf with a spade. You can also use a non-selective weed killer to kill the grasses.
Once it is clear, spread fertilizer on the ground one week before the garden installation. Next, firm the surface. You can walk up and down on it. If there are depressed areas, fill them with topsoil and compress them. When it is firm, rake it again.

Of course, prepare your tools and materials firsthand. Measure the area where you will install your turf accurately. You may consult a professional for this if you are unsure. Choose a turf that will be appropriate to your area and your garden needs. Once you have decided, call your provider and have it delivered the same day you will lay your turf. Ensure that your turf is fresh when you install it.
How to Lay Turf
Start laying the border edges that run against your landscaping. Lay the strips as you would brick on a wall. You can overlap them slightly. Once already laid, cut off the excess turf with a sharp knife. It will make a clean edge on your lawn.
The direction where you will lay your turf will depend on the slope of your yard. To prevent erosion as well as moisture loss, run the length on the turf across the slope. If the garden installation will run along with a landscape feature, trim it according to the feature’s size and shape.

Care
Your newly laid lawn will take a few weeks to be established. At that time, it mustn’t dry out. You do not want your garden installation efforts to be for nothing. So, water them regularly. Once installed, water your turf immediately. Continue doing this until the water has soaked through beneath the turf layer. For the next two weeks, water your lawn every early morning or evening. At this time, the chances of evaporation are less. The amount of watering will depend on the weather. Of course, during the summer months, your lawn needs more water.
The Right Height
You may start mowing once the grass is 2.5 cm – 5 cm high. The lawn should be this high after two weeks. But don’t worry if you don’t see the lawn as high as this. The growth will depend on different factors. As a rule of thumb, don’t mow more than one-third of the height of the grass. When mowing right after the installation, ensure that the grass has established roots. You may check this by gently tugging on the grass. If it resists, then the lawn is ready. Set your lawnmower on its highest setting. It will prevent stressing the grass. Also, it is better to ensure that your mower blades are sharp. A blunt lawnmower will uproot your lawn. Once the turf is ready, it is good to reduce the height of the cut gradually.
Fertilize
A newly installed lawn will also need feed to thrive. Choose a fertilizer with balanced levels of Nitrogen, Phosphate, and Potassium. It is best to do it during the growing season. The duration of feeding will depend on the variety of your grass. But usually, it is done every four to six weeks. Of course, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation on how to use and apply the feed.
Laying turf can be fuss-free if you know how to do it. At the end of it, this garden installation will bring out instant beauty in your area. Of course, provided that you take care of and maintain your new lawn.
